IPL (Intense Pulsed Light): The “Magic Eraser” for Summer Sun Spots

Rejuvenecimiento Estético

Summer leaves us with wonderful memories, but often also small “traces” on our skin in the form of dark spots, redness and a dull texture. If you look in the mirror after the holidays and notice that the sun has left its mark, we have good news: autumn is the perfect season for a “reset”.

Today, at Clínica Ramírez & Gálvez, we talk about one of our favourite technologies for repairing skin after summer: IPL or Intense Pulsed Light. A versatile and effective tool that can restore the radiance and even tone your face has lost.

What exactly is IPL and how does it work? 🤔

Many people confuse IPL with laser, but they are different technologies. IPL uses broad-spectrum light (like a very powerful camera flash) that travels in all directions. Using specific filters, we can select the wavelength that is selectively absorbed by a particular colour in the skin:

  • Melanin (the brown pigment in dark spots).
  • Haemoglobin (the red pigment in small veins or capillaries).

Once absorbed, the light energy is converted into heat and destroys these imperfections in a controlled way; the body then eliminates them naturally.

The many faces of IPL: what can we treat? ✅

IPL is incredibly versatile. At our clinic, we use it to treat a wide variety of concerns:

  • Sun spots and pigmentation: It is the star treatment for removing solar lentigines (“age spots”) that appear on the face, décolletage and hands after summer.
  • Redness and rosacea: It is very effective for treating diffuse redness and small broken capillaries (couperose), significantly improving the symptoms of rosacea.
  • Overall photorejuvenation: The light stimulates collagen production in the skin, improving overall texture, evening out skin tone, reducing pore size and adding a beautiful glow.
  • Dry eye treatment: Yes, for the eyes too! In ophthalmology, we use IPL with specific settings to reduce eyelid inflammation and improve the function of the meibomian glands, making it one of the most advanced therapies for certain types of dry eye.

Why is autumn the perfect season for IPL? 🍂

This is the key. For IPL treatment to be safe and effective, the skin must not be tanned. Treating skin with excess melanin increases the risk of side effects such as burns or pigmentation changes. In addition, after the session the skin is more sensitive to the sun. Autumn, with lower levels of solar radiation, provides the ideal safe setting for the treatment and a perfect recovery.
