Children’s Eye Health: Key to a Successful Return to School

As September settles in and the new school year gets under way, families find themselves immersed in the complex organisation of everyday life: buying books and school supplies, adjusting to new timetables and planning after-school activities. However, there is a decisive biological factor that directly determines children’s ability to learn, their concentration and their emotional development, and which very often goes completely unnoticed: the health of their visual system.

It is scientifically estimated that more than 80% of the learning a child processes throughout their school years takes place through vision. Reading the board, understanding texts, coordination in sports and the use of digital tools all depend on perfect integration between the eyes and the brain. At Clínica Ramírez & Gálvez, we know that a visual disorder that is not diagnosed in time very often results in frustration, early tiredness, lack of interest in school and even misdiagnoses of attention deficit or hyperactivity. That is why, as this new school year begins, we want to explain why a complete paediatric ophthalmology examination is the best guarantee of health and performance for your children.

Warning signs: how to spot vision problems in children 🧐

Unlike adults, children rarely say that they “can’t see properly” or that things look blurry. For them, the way they perceive their surroundings is the only way they have known since birth, so they assume their limitation is completely normal. This lack of awareness means that eye conditions can progress undetected unless we pay particular attention to their daily behaviour, both at home and in the classroom:

  • Focusing and posture habits: Repeatedly squinting or narrowing the eyes to look at distant objects, tilting the head to one side when fixing their gaze, or getting too close to books, exercise books and digital screens.
  • Specific reading difficulties: Constantly losing their place in the text, skipping lines or words, needing a finger to avoid getting lost on the page, or reading noticeably more slowly than their classmates.
  • Recurring physical discomfort: Constant rubbing of the eyelids, red eyes after finishing homework, compulsive blinking or frequent complaints of headaches in the forehead area after school.
  • Frustration and changes in behaviour: Clear reluctance to read or study, lack of concentration during short periods of work, low self-esteem or school results that do not reflect the effort they put in.

The most common eye conditions during childhood development 💡

During childhood, the visual system is in a critical phase of neuromuscular maturation. The first 7 or 8 years of life represent a fundamental biological “window of opportunity”: any abnormality that is not corrected during this period can leave permanent, irreversible effects on visual acuity in adulthood.

  • Refractive errors (Myopia, Hyperopia and Astigmatism): These prevent sharp images from forming on the retina. Myopia makes distance vision difficult (the board), while hyperopia forces the eye muscles to make a constant accommodative effort to focus up close, causing extreme fatigue. Astigmatism, meanwhile, distorts images at any distance.
  • Amblyopia (commonly known as “Lazy Eye”): This occurs when one eye has a much higher prescription or a misalignment, which leads the brain to ignore the signal from that eye to avoid double vision. If it is not detected and treated in time with the appropriate correction or patching, the affected eye will never develop full visual acuity.
  • Strabismus and binocular disorders: Loss of the parallel alignment of the eyes. Beyond its cosmetic implications, strabismus prevents the brain from fusing the two images into one, cancelling out three-dimensional vision (stereopsis or depth perception), which is essential for motor coordination and sport.

The difference between a basic sight test and an eye examination 🔬

There is a false sense of security when relying solely on vision screenings at school or superficial optical check-ups. Although these tests are useful for measuring distance visual acuity with a letter chart, they are entirely insufficient for assessing the anatomical and functional health of a child’s eye.

A medical eye examination goes far beyond determining whether a child needs glasses:

  1. Refraction with cycloplegic drops: Children have such a powerful capacity for muscular accommodation that they can “compensate for” and mask high prescriptions during a conventional test. Specialised medical eye drops temporarily relax the ciliary muscle, allowing us to measure the real dioptres with absolute precision.
  2. Assessment of anatomical health and the back of the eye: We examine the transparency of the ocular media (cornea, lens) and look in detail at the retina and optic nerve to rule out organic disease or congenital malformations.
  3. Binocular vision and eye movement assessment: We analyse the exact coordination of both eyes when following objects and how the visual system works as a team in near vision.
