Xanthelasma
Xanthelasma are yellowish fatty deposits that appear on the eyelids, usually near the inner corner of the eye. Although they are not usually a health problem, they can be a sign of high cholesterol and affect the appearance of the eyes.
They are often linked to high cholesterol, although they can appear without any metabolic disorder.
They are painless and do not affect vision, but they can be cosmetically bothersome.
CO2 laser is the most precise treatment, with the best recovery.
What is Xanthelasma?
Small fatty deposits that can appear in anyone
Xanthelasma are benign accumulations of cholesterol that appear as yellowish plaques on the skin of the eyelids. Although they can appear in anyone, they are more common in middle-aged adults and may be associated with high levels of cholesterol or triglycerides in the blood.
While they are not dangerous, over time they can grow in size and affect the appearance of the face.
How can you recognise this condition on the eyelids?
✅ Yellowish or whitish plaques on the eyelids, near the inner corner of the eye.
✅ Smooth or slightly raised texture.
✅ Gradual growth over time.
✅ May appear on one or both eyelids.
✅ Painless and does not affect vision, but can be cosmetically bothersome.
If you have any of these lesions, we recommend an ophthalmological assessment to determine the best treatment.
Factors that can trigger their appearance
🔹 High cholesterol and triglycerides: Although they can appear in people with no lipid metabolism disorder, their presence may indicate a cholesterol problem.
🔹 Genetic predisposition: Some people are more prone to developing them because of their family history.
🔹 Metabolic diseases: Such as diabetes or liver problems, which can influence the build-up of fat in the skin.
🔹 Age: They are more common in people over 40.
An eye examination is enough to identify them
At Clínica Ramírez & Gálvez, we assess xanthelasma through:
🔹 Clinical examination: Detailed observation of the lesion during the consultation.
🔹 Lipid profile: A cholesterol and triglyceride test is recommended to detect possible metabolic disorders.
🔹 Aesthetic assessment: To determine the best treatment according to the size and location of the xanthelasma.
