Eyelid bags and excess skin
Blepharoplasty Surgery
Blepharoplasty is a structural and aesthetic procedure that corrects excess skin and bags, giving a more rested and aesthetically rejuvenated appearance. It’s not just about removing skin!
Most patients feel comfortable returning to their normal activities after 7–10 days
In some cases, surgery also improves vision by removing excess skin that obstructs the visual field
Blepharoplasty offers natural aesthetic results, with no visible scars when performed correctly
What is Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is a structural and aesthetic procedure that corrects a tired, aged appearance around the eyes. It can be performed on the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids or both, depending on each patient's needs.
Our view is that blepharoplasty is NOT just about removing skin. As oculoplastic ophthalmologists, we analyse every detail comprehensively to achieve the most natural results possible.
This surgery improves the appearance of the eyes and, in some cases, can also benefit visual function if excess skin is interfering with vision.
How can you tell if you have excess skin or bags on your eyelids?
The main symptom indicating the need for blepharoplasty is the presence of bags or excess skin on the eyelids, which give a tired appearance. Other symptoms include:
🔹 Visible bags on the lower eyelids due to fat herniation.
🔹 Drooping eyelids (ptosis), which may be caused by weakness of the levator muscle (the muscle that opens the eye) and NOT simply by excess skin.
🔹 A tired look despite getting enough rest. Wrinkles and sagging skin can take away the freshness of the face.
If you experience these symptoms, it is important to see a specialist to assess whether surgery is a suitable option.
Why do bags and excess skin appear on the eyelids?
The formation of bags and drooping eyelids are natural processes of ageing, but they can also be influenced by genetic or environmental factors. Some of the main causes are:
✅ Ageing: As the skin loses elasticity and the muscles weaken, the eyelid fat can shift forwards.
✅ Genetics: If you have a family history of eye bags, you are more likely to develop them.
✅ Sun exposure: Ultraviolet radiation damages the skin and accelerates the appearance of wrinkles and excess skin.
✅ Lifestyle: Smoking and alcohol consumption, as well as lack of sleep, can worsen this condition.
Reducing these factors and following a healthy lifestyle can help prevent the premature appearance of bags on the eyelids.
Blepharoplasty surgery: an effective solution
The most effective treatment begins with an expert analysis of the problem. The procedure involves correcting bags and excess skin, but the operation is personalised to address the real cause of the drooping eyelid, even if it is due to muscle weakness.
Comprehensive treatment includes:
🔹 Surgical precision: removal of excess skin and fat using advanced techniques.
🔹 Functional correction (ptosis): addressing weakness of the levator muscle to return the eyelid to its natural position.
🔹 Advanced techniques: we use state-of-the-art technology to ensure precision and natural results.
Surgery not only improves appearance but can also relieve any visual obstruction caused by excess skin on the eyelids.
The solution to functional problems

Types of Blepharoplasty
There are different types of blepharoplasty depending on the area to be treated and each patient's specific needs.
Before and after
Blepharoplasty: Upper and Lower Eyelids and Brow Lift
For comprehensive, harmonious aesthetic rejuvenation, a combined procedure was planned: a brow lift to raise the frame of the eyes, an upper blepharoplasty to open up the eyelid, and a lower blepharoplasty to correct the bags. The result is a visibly more open, fresh and rested expression, in complete harmony with the patient's natural features.
Before and after
Blepharoplasty: Upper Eyelids and Brow Lift
To correct the feeling of "heavy eyelids" and rejuvenate the eyes, a high-precision procedure combining three techniques in one was performed: an upper blepharoplasty to remove excess skin, repositioning of the lacrimal gland, which had descended, and a brow lift (browpexy). The result, after just a month and a half, is a visibly more open, brighter and more youthful look, with an even eyelid and a higher brow.
Before and after
Blepharoplasty and Lacrimal Gland Repositioning
In this case, in addition to excess skin on the upper eyelid, the patient had a bulge in the outer area that became much more noticeable when she closed her eyes. This "bulge" was caused by luxation (or herniation) of the lacrimal gland. For an optimal aesthetic result, an upper blepharoplasty was performed, combining removal of the excess skin with repositioning and anchoring of the gland in its correct position, thus treating the problem at its root.
Before and after
Blepharoplasty: Upper and Lower Eyelids, Brow Lift and CO₂ Laser
This case is the perfect example of comprehensive aesthetic rejuvenation of the eye area, in which all the signs of ageing were treated for a harmonious result. The planned surgery combined a brow lift with a complete blepharoplasty (upper and lower) to reposition the tissues and remove excess skin and bags. As a complementary treatment, CO₂ laser resurfacing was carried out to improve skin quality and texture, achieving a complete yet always natural transformation.
Before and after
Blepharoplasty: Upper Eyelids
The challenge in this young patient was to correct the eyelid's "A-frame deformity", which gave her a sunken, uneven appearance. A high-precision upper blepharoplasty was planned, removing a minimal amount of skin and focusing on restoring volume to achieve an ideal eyelid contour. The result is a much more symmetrical, harmonious and aesthetically balanced look, preserving her natural appearance as much as possible.
Before and after
Blepharoplasty: Transconjunctival Approach
To rejuvenate this patient's eyes, a two-step plan was designed. First, the fat bags were removed by means of a transconjunctival blepharoplasty (an internal approach, with no scar on the skin). Second, lateral skin tightening was performed to firm up the eyelid skin. This combination of techniques allows us to achieve a firmer, more rested and natural look, always respecting the original expression.

Answers toyour questions
We answer the most common questions about the symptoms and treatment of excess eyelid skin. Find all the information you need here to make your decision with complete confidence.
Is blepharoplasty surgery painful?
The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, so you will not feel any pain during surgery. After the operation, some swelling and bruising is normal, but pain is minimal and can be controlled with painkillers.
How long does recovery take?
Most patients recover in around 7–10 days. After this time, bruising and swelling will have reduced considerably.
Is it a safe procedure?
Yes, blepharoplasty is one of the safest cosmetic procedures. When performed by qualified professionals, the risks are minimal and the results are usually very satisfactory.
Are the results permanent?
Although the effects of ageing continue, the results of surgery can last between 5 and 10 years, depending on factors such as genetics and skin care.
Can I have blepharoplasty if I have other eye problems?
It is important to carry out a prior assessment to make sure there are no eye conditions that would rule out surgery. However, in most cases there is no contraindication.
Can I have blepharoplasty on both upper and lower eyelids?
Yes, surgery can be performed on the upper and lower eyelids at the same time, depending on the diagnosis.
