Ocular Evisceration

Ocular evisceration is a surgical procedure in which the internal contents of the eye are removed, preserving the sclera (the outer layer) and the eye muscles.

The eye muscles are preserved, allowing better movement of the ocular prosthesis.

It reduces chronic eye pain in cases of serious eye disease or injury.

It is less invasive than enucleation, preserving part of the structure of the eye.

What is Ocular Evisceration?

Ocular evisceration is an ophthalmic surgical procedure in which the internal contents of the eyeball are removed, while the sclera and the extraocular muscles are preserved. Depending on the technique used, the cornea may be removed or preserved. It differs from enucleation, in which the entire eye is removed.

This procedure is indicated in cases where the eye has lost its visual function and causes pain, recurrent infections or cosmetic deformities. Its main aim is to improve the patient's quality of life and to prepare the eye socket for a prosthesis.

The surgery step by step

1️⃣ Local or general anaesthesia, depending on the patient's case.
2️⃣ Removal of the contents of the eye, preserving the sclera and the extraocular muscles.
3️⃣ Placement of an orbital implant, which supports the future prosthesis.
4️⃣ Closure of the eye socket with specialised sutures.
5️⃣ Placement of an ocular conformer, which maintains the shape of the socket until the definitive prosthesis is fitted.

The procedure is safe, and recovery is monitored with medication and ophthalmological check-ups.

Cosmetic and functional recovery

After surgery, a custom-made ocular prosthesis is fitted, restoring the natural appearance of the eye. The prosthesis is designed with a colour and texture similar to the natural eye, offering a discreet and functional cosmetic solution.

🔹 It is usually fitted 4–6 weeks after surgery.
🔹 The movement of the implant gives a more natural look.
🔹 It does not affect the vision of the other eye or the patient's daily life.

The adaptation process is straightforward and significantly improves the patient's confidence and wellbeing.

After surgery

✅ Antibiotics and anti-inflammatories to prevent infection.
✅ Avoid strenuous physical exertion in the first few weeks.
✅ Eye cleaning and hygiene as instructed by your doctor.
✅ Regular ophthalmological check-ups for follow-up and fitting of the prosthesis.

Recovery is generally quick and with few complications when the specialist's instructions are followed.

Usually between 4 and 6 weeks after surgery, once the eye socket has healed.

Pain is minimal and is controlled with appropriate medication. Recovery is usually quick.
